The Dark Knight Rises DVD Review

Batman has always passed me by a little.  Being surrounded by boys and my husband is a bit of a comic character fanatic, I have sat through more than my fair share of boys films, but somehow, I have not watched any of the actual Batman films.  I know the stories, it would be impossible not to, so when I saw the trailer at the cinema for The Dark Knight Rises, even I thought that it looked really good.

'It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.'

It is a very dark film, so if you are looking for something to cheer you up, this isn't the film for you.  What it does offer though is a gripping story line, great characters and great special effects.  I also liked the sound track, which I thought added to the drama of the film.

The teenager is the real film buff in the house and he wasn't the biggest fan of the previous Batman films, but he loved this film and said it was amazing, one of the best films he saw last year.  According to him, it is is a very fitting end to the Batman films and he thought the plot was really clever with some predictable bits but some good twists too.  For me, I was particularly impressed with the acting.  For all the action and drama, there is a real emotional undertone to the film.  Having said that, the character of Bane, played superbly by Tom Hardy who is barely recognisable beneath his gruesome mask, is a seriously menacing character and a fantastic villain.

The teenager and the husband definitely gave this film the thumbs up and although I probably wouldn't watch it again as it is a long film, I did enjoy it and I would definitely recommend it.

I was sent a copy of The Dark Knight Rises for the purpose of this review. All opinions are my own.
